Having a new home built is an exciting time. Not only do you get to live in a space no other person has occupied, but you also get to play a role in creating it. From those beautiful hardwood floors to the large, bench-seat bay window looking out across your property – your new home is tailored to you. But, your new home also comes with new chores. How do you clean that big bay window? Let us take a look!
Gather Your Tools
To clean your new windows, you will need several tools. A spray bottle is a must. It makes applying your cleaning solution much easier. If you need to remove paint residue, you will also need a utility knife and professional-grade glass scraper. It is not a good idea to use a plain razor blade as this can scratch your window’s surface and leave unsightly etchings. To clean your window, a simple squeegee and microfiber towel are your go-to tools.
Paint
Whether you hired a wonderful contractor or not, accidents happen and you may find yourself wondering how to remove flecks of paint from your window. First, mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of dish soap in a spray bottle filled with warm water. Liberally spray the paint residue with your solution. If the paint is run off from the actual frame and has remained connected to it, use a utility knife to lightly slice around the frame. This helps to make the paint separation easier. If you are simply removing splatter from the glass, you can skip this step. Using a professional-grade glass scraper, held at a 30 or 45-degree angle, slowly remove the paint. (Reapply your cleaning solution as you go. Keeping the paint wet and lubricated will help decrease the likelihood of damaging your glass.)
Cleaning
After you remove any residual paint, you should give those windows a thorough cleaning. Windows really do not need a specialized spray. You can use the same soapy solution to remove any dirt from your window’s glass panes. Removing dirt from your windows with a squeegee is ideal. Not only do rags, crumbled newspaper wads, and paper towels smear the dirt around without actually removing it, they also create static charges that attract dirt more quickly. Squeegees do not do this. Once you spray your window, work from top to bottom, pulling your squeegee across the window’s surface in a large “S” pattern. (Make sure to wipe the blade any time you remove it from the window’s surface.) Finish by using a microfiber towel to remove any remaining water from your window frame for a spot-free view across your brand new lawn.
