Cleaning your windows may be your least favorite chore. However, much of this may be due to outdated window cleaning myths. Below, we bust the four most common myths regarding cleaning your windows.
Myth 1. Using a wadded up newspaper is the best way to get rid of smudges!
Fact: Wadded up balls of newspaper, paper towels, or rags are actually the worst types of materials you can use to clean your windows. Why? These materials actually create static electricity as you drag them around your window’s surface. This means they super charge your glass and essentially attract more dirt, dust and particles once you are done. On top of that, these materials do not remove dirt from the surface of your window. Instead, they just smear it around. So not only do they attract more dirt, they do not remove the first layer of filth to begin with! Instead, invest in a rubber-tipped squeegee. It will give you that professional, streak-free clean!
Myth 2. You need to buy Cleaning Product XYZ from the store for the best clean!
Fact: Spending money on a chemical cleaner from the store is a waste. You probably already have everything you need to create the perfect window cleaning solution at home. In a spray bottle, gently mix a solution of warm water with 2 to 3 drops of dish soap. (You can add a bit of white vinegar if you wish, or mix a solution of just vinegar and warm water too! Using a vinegar and water mix is non-toxic, environmentally friendly and chemical free.) This all-purpose cleaning solution can be used both inside and outside.
Myth 3. Clean your windows when the sun is shining through them so you can see if you missed a spot!
Fact: This is a huge no-no! Cleaning your windows when they are hot and exposed to direct sunlight is going to result in problems. When the windows are hot and the sunlight is shining down upon them, your cleaning solution will dry faster. It is likely you will need to re-clean your windows, regardless of the technique you use, if you first clean them in direct sunlight.
Myth 4. Hiring a professional is a waste of money. You can just do it yourself and save money.
Fact: If you use the right tools and cleaning solutions, you can save yourself time and money. However, cleaning windows is not for everyone, regardless of the cleaning method. In addition to this, there are some windows best left to professionals. Window cleaning professionals can clean those hard-to-reach windows. They also have the expertise to remove even the most stuck on gunk safely. They can spot potential issues and provide you with solutions to nagging problems.
