As the spring rolls in, the cleaning bug bites millions of Americans. From yard work to dusting shelves, you will have your hands full. Windows tend to be one of the most hated chores for those conducting their annual spring-cleaning frenzy. However, it does not have to be such a struggle. Check out the best ways to get your windows clean this spring below.
The Right Way to Do It Yourself
For most, scrubbing windows can feel like it takes forever and still never truly gets clean. Most of the problems with the do-it-yourself (DIY) method, however, stem from using the wrong tools and techniques. If you have found yourself scrubbing away with rags, newspapers, or paper towels, you have been wasting your time. First, throw out those old rags. Window washing is for squeegees! Rags, newspapers and other paper or cloth products create static electricity. This, in turn, attracts more dirt and dust particles than you had in the first place. The rubber lip on a squeegee, however, does not create this static charge, which means your glass stays cleaner longer. It also drags dirt off the surface of your glass, instead of smearing it around as a rag does. You also do not have to waste your money on fancy cleaning chemicals. A simple solution of vinegar (or dish soap) and warm water in a squirt bottle is really all you need. For large, uninterrupted windows, spray your glass with the solution then, starting in a top corner, work your squeegee down in a large “S” pattern. For multi-pane windows, a simple top to bottom stroke with your squeegee will do. Make sure you wipe the blade any time you remove it from the glass surface to ensure you do not track dirty water back over clean pieces.
Hire a Professional
If you would prefer to skip cleaning your windows altogether, hire a professional. A reputable expert already has all the right equipment and the knowledge to use them. Hiring a professional may be especially appealing to those with multi-story windows. Some professionals will even clean the exterior side of your windows. Make sure to ask, however, before assuming. (Also – a professional window cleaner is very different from a house cleaning service. The majority of house cleaners are not trained to clean windows appropriately and will likely not consider the exterior side at all.)
Clean Windows, Clear Views
Regardless of your preferred method, cleaning your windows can brighten any day. It allows for clear views and ample natural light. Don’t let your windows cloud your home for one more day.
