How to Remove Hard Water Spots

Hard water spots are a pain to deal with. Cleaning them can be much harder than cleaning regular spots and they can be ugly to look at. The stains are caused by the minerals in your water. Once the water evaporates the minerals stay on your windows. This can happen to the windows on your home, your car, and glass showers. Here are three different ways to clean those tough hard water spots.

  • Lemon juice

The acidity in lemon juice is a great way to clean hard water spots. Use fresh lemons if available, because they work better than bottled lemon juice. Start out by rolling your lemons on a hard surface exerting some pressure on them before slicing them in half. This actually helps the juices flow easier. Juice the lemons and put it in a spray bottle that contains water. You can also apply the lemon juice directly through a towel or just rub half a lemon right on the surface of the window. After applying the lemon, let it rest for a while before using glass cleaner or water to remove it.

  • White toothpaste

That stuff you have sitting in your medicine cabinet can actually remove hard water spots. That’s because it’s designed to be abrasive and remove the buildup of minerals. Thin out the toothpaste using water so that you can spread it easily and avoid using large amounts of toothpaste. Place the toothpaste on the window and let it rest for a little bit. Then use a sponge, brush or towel to gently scrub the surface. Wash the toothpaste off the window. Finish by cleaning with a glass cleaner and drying the window completely. If you don’t dry it completely you could end up with more hard water spots.

  • Abrasive cleaners

Abrasive cleaners such as Comet or baking soda are also great. They can be sprinkled right onto the hard water spots. You want to start out by wetting the glass so that the powder can easily stick to it. Then sprinkle the cleaner right on to the glass. The two will come together to create a paste. Use a towel and apply some elbow grease to really work the cleaner into the hard water spots. Rinse off the cleaner using water and then follow it up with glass cleaner. Make sure you dry the glass completely when you’re done cleaning.
