Window cleaning is an art. This chore should be done at least twice a year to ensure sparkling clean views year round. Unfortunately, many homeowners find this chore laborious and frustrating. The streak-free clarity they are looking for is often hampered by the way they are cleaning windows.
Most people use wadded up rags, newspapers or paper towels to clean their windows. Spraying tons of chemicals on the surface and smearing them around does not actually lift and remove most dirt. It simply drags it around the surface of your glass, creating static as it goes. Static, in turn, attracts more dust and dirt. Below are the best ways to create a streak-free, crystal clear view this fall.
- Cleaning Solutions:
You do not need to waste money on chemicals for most window cleaning situations. You can use household products to get a streak-free shine. A squirt of dish soap or a bit of vinegar mixed into a bucket of warm water can clean almost anything sticking to a window’s surface.
- Large Windows:
Large windows create beautiful, unrestricted views of the landscape. They also create a large cleaning surface. Strip applicators are great for applying soapy water to the glass without scratching it. Use a large squeegee to remove the soapy water in a large “S” pattern, starting from the top. (Remember to clean the squeegee between each pass to remove any dirty water from the blade.) Water around and on the pane can be removed with a microfiber towel.
- Multi-Pane Windows:
Multi-pane windows do not require large tools. Use a sponge or hog-bristle brush to apply the soapy water to the glass surface. A smaller squeegee can be used on each pane to remove water. As with the large windows, use a microfiber cloth to remove excess water and clean the squeegee blade as you work.
- Power Washing:
Power washing is great for hard-to-reach places. Second floor windows are easily accessed by the jet of a power washer. Frames and stuck on grime can be blasted off with little effort. When using a power washer on glass, use high pressure to lift dirt. Use high flow to rinse it away. If your power washer does not include a solution tank, pretreat the windows with your cleaning agent.
- Tips:
Window scrapers can help to scrape stuck on gunk from your window during cleaning. If you do not own a power washer, a scraper or safety razor may be your next best solution for stuck on grime. Furthermore, the methods above can be used on both the interior and exterior of your house.
