When painting a window frame, paint can easily drip or splash onto the glass panes. Poorly taping or not taping a window at all can lead to paint swipes as well. Regardless of the reason, however, there is a definite way to remove paint easily.

  • Preparations:

Before removing paint from your windows, it is important to gather any necessary supplies. Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of dish soap with warm water. Pour this mixture into a spray bottle. You are not looking to make bubbles, so keep the mixing easy. Window cleaner can be used in place of the soap mixture. A utility knife and a glass scraper will be needed as well. After removing the paint, a squeegee can be used to help clean any residue and dirt from the window for optimal view.

  • Removal:
  1. Spray the soap mixture liberally on the window where the undesired paint sits. As you continue through the steps, monitor this solution. It is important to keep the areas being scraped wet. This will reduce the potential to scratch the glass with the scraper. Reapply this solution should you notice dry areas.
  2. Using the utility knife, lightly slice around the frame. This will serve to create a clean, neat separation that will reduce the likelihood of tears or ragged edges between the glass panes and the painted frame.
  3. Keeping the glass scraper at a 30 or 45-degree angle, slowly scrape off the paint. A word of caution: holding the scraper at a 90-degree angle will make this harder and increases the likelihood of slicing the glass. Use steady scraping motions; this will make the task much easier and again, help to reduce accidental damages to the window or frame.

  • Clean Up:

To clean up, wipe the window and frame dry. This will allow you to see any missed spots easily. Once the window is free of the unwanted paint, spray the window once more with your soap solution. If you are cleaning a single pane of glass, use the squeegee to clean the surface by swiping it across the glass in a large ā€œSā€ motion, starting at the top. If you are cleaning a multi-pane window, use a small squeegee and scrape from top to bottom to clean the glass.

  • Tips:

There are a few tips that can help make this project easier. First, placing a drop cloth on the floor before starting can help prevent it from damages. Since you are working in that area, you may step on paint flakes that fall from the window as you clean it. This can smash the paint scraping into carpets or wood floors and cause issues. In addition to this, keep the blade of your paint scraper clean as you work. This will allow it to scrape smoothly across the glass surface.
