When it comes to your home’s views, beautifully clean windows are a must. Not only do they provide you with a way to see what is going on outside, but they also allow natural light to filter into your living spaces. However, cleaning windows can feel like one of the most frustrating homeowner tasks on your laundry list of chores. Streaking is one of the biggest problems when it comes to cleaning your windows. It can make you feel like hours of scrubbing have gotten you nowhere. Below, we talk about how to fix the dreaded glass streaking for good, helping reduce the time and energy you spend cleaning your windows.

It Is All About Using the Right Tools

For decades, people have used rags, wadded up newspaper, or paper towels to clean their windows. However, did you know that these tools are just smearing that dirt around? None of them actually really remove much of the dirt and grime built up on your window surfaces. In fact, they make matters even worse because they create static electricity, which actually attracts dirt and dust particles faster! Today’s professionals have one indispensable tool they rely on when it comes to cleaning your windows: the squeegee. Unlike rags, towels and newspaper, the rubber lip on the squeegee does not create static electricity and actually removes dirt particles from your window. Not only does this mean you actually get a streak-free clean the first time, but you will not need to clean your windows as often either.

And Using Them Right!

Using a squeegee to clean your windows is relatively simple. First, spray your window with a cleaning solution made from vinegar and water. For large or single-paned windows, clean from the top down. Placing your squeegee in a corner, drag it horizontally across the top before wrapping down in a large “S” pattern. Do this for the length of the window until all of the cleaning solution has been removed. (Any time you lift your squeegee from the glass, wipe the blade off to remove the dirty liquid from it before setting it back down on the window. This will help prevent you from tracking any residue on already cleaned portions of the glass.) For multi-pane windows, a smaller squeegee can be used. Simply place your squeegee at the top of the pane and drag straight down. As with the large windows, clean your blade any time you lift your squeegee.
