A perfectly clean window allows for unobstructed views of your landscape without spots, dirt and grime. However, getting that clear view can be a hassle. Below are five rules anyone with windows should know to help achieve that streak-free shine.
- Use the Right Cleaners:
Window cleaning products are sold virtually everywhere. Many of these cleaning agents contain toxic chemicals. However, you can make your own out of simple ingredients you probably already have in your home. Try mixing a bit of white vinegar into a bucket of warm water for a non-toxic all-purpose cleaner. A squirt of dish soap can be mixed with warm water as well. These cleaning solutions can be used on both the inside and outside of your windows.
- Use the Right Tools:
We have all heard various things when it comes to cleaning windows. From paper towels to crumpled newspaper, suggestions seem to be endless. Unfortunately, many of these are misguided. Crumpled newspaper, rags and paper towels actually detract from a window’s cleanliness. These items smear dirt around instead of removing it. They also create static, which will attract dirt and dust faster. Professionals recommend a different set of tools: squeegees, microfiber clothes and hog-bristle brushes.
- It’s All About Technique:
Clean your windows when the sun is not directly beating down upon them. This will only dry your cleaning agents rapidly and create more work for you.
When it comes to large windows, the squeegee is your best bet. Apply your cleaning solution to the window. Starting from the top of the window, remove the water with your squeegee in a large “S” pattern. Be sure to clean your squeegee each time it leaves the surface to the glass to prevent tracking dirty water onto clean glass.
For multi-pane or small windows, a hog-bristle brush or small squeegee will work best. For these, fit a squeegee to the small windowpane and drag downwards, wiping the rubber clean between passes.
When you are done cleaning the glass, use a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining water from the windowpanes. This will help decrease the rate of dirt accumulation.
- To Scrape or Not To Scrape:
If you have painted the window frame and need to remove paint, consider using a professional grade glass scraper. Avoid using a razor blade; this can likely damage your glass. The professional scraper will help to reduce chances of doing so. Using your cleaning solution, spritz the area you wish to remove paint from. You will want to keep this area wet as you scrape to further decrease chances of scratching your glass.
- Using a Power Washer is Ok…Sometimes:
A power washer is ok to use on the outside surface of your glass. This is especially true when you are cleaning windows above the ground level. However, be sure to keep your safety in mind above all else. Start with a low pressure to make sure you do not propel yourself backwards off a ladder. Do not power wash windows on a ladder during high winds.
