Getting your windows crystal clear can be tedious. However, following the below dos and don’ts can make it much easier and faster.

Tools:

  • Do Use the Right Tools: The squeegee is the best tool when it comes to thoroughly cleaning your windows. The rubber portion gently scrapes dirt away. If you do not have a squeegee, a soft sponge or microfiber cloth can also be used. These items help scrub away dirt without leaving particles behind. If you have stuck on gunk or paint, purchase a professional glass scraper. These are safer for use on windows. These tools and methods can be used both indoors and outdoors.
  • Don’t Use Rags, Newspaper or Paper Towels: We all have heard different ways to scrub a window clean. Using a crumpled piece of newspaper is one of those. Newspaper, paper towels and rags do not life and remove dirt. They simple smear it around. In addition, these items create static charge that sits on the window glass. This will attract dust and dirt more quickly once you have finished cleaning. If you use these items, you will find yourself scrubbing your windows twice as often without ever achieving that clear view. For anything stuck on, do not use a razor blade. This is much more likely to scratch your glass.

Techniques:

  • Do Use the Proper Techniques: When you use your squeegee on a large window, swipe it across in a large “S” pattern. Start at the top to ensure the dirty water drips downwards and does not run back across your clean glass. For small windows, simply swipe the squeegee from top to bottom in one long stroke. Any time you remove the squeegee from the window’s surface, wipe the blade clean. This will prevent you from smearing dirt back onto your window.
  • Don’t Leave Sitting Water: Any water that remains on the window frame should be wiped off. Sitting water attracts dirt and dust much the same as static charge. Make sure you dry all surfaces around your glass to keep them cleaner longer.

Tips:

  • Do Mix Your Own Cleaning Solution: There are many window cleaners available on the market today. Most contain toxic chemicals. You can create your own cleaning solution A few drops of dish soap in a squirt bottle of warm water is really all you need to get that perfect clean. White vinegar mixed with warm water is also great and non-toxic. If you have pets or plants, these solutions are ideal.
  • Don’t Ignore the Weather: Clean your windows when the sun is not directly beating down on your glass. This will cause your cleaning solution to dry faster and create more streaks. If you are cleaning the exterior side of your window, do not do so in high wind. This can also dry out your solution as it sits on the glass.
