Throughout the year, your home’s surfaces collect dust, dirt, and allergens. Your windows are the eyes of your homes. Not only do they permit views in and out, they also open to allow fresh air to circulate into your home. This spring, get a head start on combating allergies and give your home’s windows a deep cleaning.
Your All Purpose Cleaning Solution
You probably have everything you need to clean almost every surface in your home right in your kitchen. Combine a few drops of dish soap with warm water in a spray bottle. Alternatively, you can combine a bit of white vinegar with warm water. Both solutions provide excellent cleaning power.
Clean Your Screens
Your screens are your primary defense against allergens outside your home. All year, they accumulate various types of grime and allergens. Give them a thorough cleaning this spring to ensure those allergens do not sneak in. Start with removing your screens. Wet them with your garden hose to rinse off any loose dirt. Spritz your cleaning solution all over the screen’s surface. Using a soft rag or brush, gently scrub the screen. (If your screens are fragile, make sure you do not scrub too hard!) Flip the screen over and repeat this on the other side. Once you are done, use your hose to rinse the dirty suds off. Allow your screens to dry thoroughly before reinstalling them.
Clean Your Windows
While your screens dry, you should take the time to clean your windows too. The following instructions can be used on both the inside and outside surfaces of your windows. In addition to your cleaning solution, you will need a squeegee and microfiber towel. Spray your cleaning solution over the surface of your window. If you have a large window, start with your squeegee in the top left or right corner. Drag your squeegee in a large “S” pattern across the top and snaking downwards. Every time you lift your squeegee from surface, make sure to wipe the blade. This prevents dirty water from being tracked over your cleaned surfaces. If you have small or multi-pane windows, simply drag your squeegee from top to bottom. When done, use your microfiber towel to wipe off any excess water the frames and sills of your windows.
Clean Surfaces, Less Allergens
Cleaning your window surfaces can help you see and breathe easier. Taking the time to clean them this spring can help reduce the allergens that can affect your breathing. If you suffer from asthma or allergies, a good spring cleaning can help reduce triggers.
